About The Shoebox Project for Women

We are a registered Canadian charity whose mission is to uplift and empower women experiencing or at-risk-of homelessness through in-kind support, education and community participation. Our Approach:

  • Through volunteer-led gift drives that benefit women who are impacted by homelessness, we build compassionate and connected communities
  • By distributing essentials of daily living to shelters and community agencies, we support women and gender-diverse people facing income inequality.
  • By building awareness and educating youth, we challenge stigmas, fight discrimination, and promote equity.

Through 45 volunteer-run Local Chapters across Canada, we have distributed over 285,000 Shoeboxes, plus an additional $1.9 million worth of other gifts & essentials, to women and gender-diverse people accessing more than 620 shelters and community agencies. 

Position Summary:

We are looking for a highly credible, authentic, perceptive, and results-oriented leader with a proven track record of successful fundraising and experience implementing the strategic and operational plans of a national non-profit organization.

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate will hold a post-secondary degree in a related field (or experience), and a minimum of 5 years work experience as an executive or senior manager at a non-profit organization or other highly relevant experience.  

They will bring to the position a deep understanding of the challenges facing women and gender diverse people facing homelessness, along with a desire to ensure that The Shoebox Project’s services and practices are at the forefront of best practices and relevant trends in the field.  

They will have excellent verbal and written communications skills and can effectively present information to a variety of audiences. An excellent relationship builder, the candidate will demonstrate creative problem solving and an ability to think outside the box about new opportunities. They value teamwork, collaboration, transparency, and diversity, equity and inclusion.

They will have experience with volunteer management, resource development, financial administration, and stakeholder relations. Fluency in French would also be a welcome asset.

  

Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership:

  • Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization

  • Foster effective teamwork and implement performance management among staff and volunteers

  • Represent the organization at community events to enhance the organization’s community profile

 

Governance and Strategic Planning:

  • Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization

  • Act as a liaison with all organizational levels, from Board of Directors to staff & volunteers

  • Meet regularly with Board of Directors and Sub-Committees to provide operational reports including financial, human resources and programming updates as well as presenting proposals and plans for Board review, discussion and approval

  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with other agencies, stakeholders,funding sources, volunteers, community groups, etc. 

  • Work to increase opportunities for The Shoebox Project to effectively meet the needs of shelters and community agencies across Canada

 

Resource Development & Communications

  • Maintain key relationships with existing funding partners, develop new relationships for The Shoebox Project and assist in identifying alternative funding opportunities

  • Oversee all fund development activities, including corporate donors, major gifts, grant writing, and more

  • Review and revise fundraising strategy to increase and diversify revenue

  • Plan, design,  and implement communications strategy to advance the public profile of the charity, including website, social media, PR, media, print

  • Serve as national spokesperson 

 

Operational Planning and Management

  • Ensure that the operation of the organization fulfills the objectives of the strategic plan, funding agreements, and the expectations of the Board

  • Oversee efficient and effective HR management and practices in the day-to-day operation of the organization

  • Oversee the management of all regional chapters, including volunteers and all assets rented or owned

  • Review and draft policies as needed and prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies

  • Review and revise program delivery models/methods

  • Ensure adherence to all legislation and standards related to health and safety, labour and human rights codes

 

Financial Planning and Management

  • Work with staff and the Finance Committee to prepare a comprehensive budget

  • Approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board of Directors

  • Ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed

  • Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization

  • Provide the Finance Committee with comprehensive, quarterly reports on the revenues and expenditures of the organization

  • Ensure that the organization complies with all legislation covering remittances

 

Risk Management

  • Identify and evaluate the risks to the organization’s people (participants, staff, management, volunteers), property, finances, public profile, and implement measures to manage risks

  • Ensure that the Board of Directors and the organization carries appropriate and adequate insurance coverage

 

Working Conditions:  Hybrid work environment with flexible hours, but with minimum 50% in The Shoebox Project office, located at 1485 Dupont Street, Toronto ON.
