To help fulfill our mission, LOFT is hiring a Team Lead, Nutrition Services.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Team Lead, Nutrition Services renders a range of services pertaining to the organization and operation of the kitchen consistent with the values and goals of the program. This individual will be responsible for the operation of the kitchen which includes menu planning, ordering of food and supplies and the supervision of cooks.
The Team Lead, Nutrition Services is also responsible for the planning, development and implementation of a meal program designed to meet the needs of the older adults and seniors living within the program as well as daily offsite Meal Program meals & seasonal meals for supportive programs’ clients. There may be evening and weekend work, as required, to meet program requirements.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Food Services
- Oversee, prepare and serve food for the meals as scheduled.
- Plan menus that ensure well balanced, nutritious and appetizing meals are served; the special dietary requirements of individual residents will be included; arrange for the posting of the menu daily; keep accurate records of the meals
- Order food and supplies for the efficient operation of the kitchen, in accordance with the budget
- Arrange for the food services required for special occasions and events within the site and at times other LOFT Complex Care programs, as required.
- Maintain inventory control of all food and supplies used by cooks; accept and store deliveries/food in proper areas and according to policy.
- Liaise with agencies and organizations providing donated food supplies; pick up this food and supplies as required.
- Ensure that the cleanliness of the kitchen areas is maintained, including the stock room, walk-in refrigerator/freezer units, dining room and all equipment, tools, dishes and utensils according to public health standards.
- Report repairs and/or maintenance that is required for kitchen equipment to superintendent.
- Make purchases of equipment required within budget guidelines, in consultation with the Program Director and Coordinator, Nutrition Services.
- Ensure that the standard of quality for the food service is maintained.
- Other related duties as assigned by the Coordinator, Nutrition Services.
Supervision of Staff
- Promote a positive team spirit within the department and the facility.
- Schedule work and vacation time to ensure there are adequate staff to operate effectively on all shifts in the kitchen and for scheduled social recreation/activation programming.
- Keep accurate records of attendance, including vacation, leaves of absence, etc.; prepare and submit payroll reports to the Program Director and Payroll team.
- Interview and hire cooks and kitchen staff, as required, in consultation with the Coordinator, Nutrition Services/Program Director.
- Supervise cooks as well as individuals involved in work placement programs and/or volunteers, to ensure that a high quality of performance is maintained, consistent with the values and goals of the program.
- Conduct performance appraisals for cooks, in accordance with LOFT Community Services policy and procedures.
- Ensure continuous improvement by ensuring continuous training and education of cooks.
Other Responsibilities
- Ensure all invoices and receipts for food services are processed in a timely and efficient manner according to LOFT policy.
- Be involved in monthly house meetings which are, among other house concerns, designed for resident consultation and input into menu planning and social/ recreational activities.
- Attend scheduled management meetings and communicate issues and make recommendations related to food services.
- Ensure that all aspects of the Health and Safety Program, as they relate to the areas of responsibility for the Team Lead, Nutrition Services are carried out in accordance with the program/LOFT Community Services policies and procedures. This responsibility may include participation on the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
- Follow infection control procedures.
- In case of fire emergency, assist with the evacuation of residents from the building.
WHAT YOU BRING:
- Post-secondary education in food services management is preferred;
- Several years of experience in food services and quantity cooking;
- Knowledge of Public Health standards and other government regulations for the storage, handling and preparation/cooking of food;
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Standards;
- Experience with vulnerable older adults and seniors with unique special needs including mental illness, addictions and/or cognitive impairments;
- Proven ability to provide effective supervision;
- Valid Food Handlers certificate – Mandatory
- Strong interpersonal skills: ability to work well with people at all levels, relating well to people of all ages and diverse backgrounds, skills and abilities
- Knowledge and understanding of the aging process and mental health issues
