To help fulfill its mission, LOFT is hiring a Overnight, Housing Support Worker.
JOB SUMMARY:
To provide assistance and support to clients living with mental illnesses in the McEwan residence or independently in the community.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Through a team oriented professional approach, the Housing Support Worker provides direct support to clients to increase their independence, dignity, and self-respect, in a safe and secure environment by:
- Building a rapport with each client to enable them to meet the daily requirements of their housing environment and promoting a healthy lifestyle; directly assisting with daily living activities, particularly in such areas as hygiene (grooming, shaving, skin care), medication management, cooking, meal planning, cleaning, shopping and budgeting in accordance with their plan of care; assisting those clients with physical disabilities or chronic illnesses in feeding, moving or transfers, toileting or incontinence when requested or required;
- Maintaining a general awareness of the activities or whereabouts of clients at the program, identifying issues, communicating or noting incidents for program leadership as required; intervening in issues pertaining to maintenance or property; providing cleaning or minor house maintenance as required; teaching clients the appropriate fire safety protocols, conducting regular health and safety checks and increasing resident awareness of safety issues;
- Maintaining the support network of social, family, medical and psychiatric community links and resources by providing reminders and occasionally accompanying clients on their medical, psychiatric or other appointments;
- Teaching conflict resolution, crisis management and problem solving on activities related to shared living; mediating issues or conflicts between clients, or between clients and neighbours, following-up on issues to ensure satisfactory resolution; contacting emergency services or supervisor as required;
- Completing and maintaining the required records or statistics such as client files, activity sheets, reports, etc. In accordance with established procedures; participating actively as a team member in program delivery by providing support and consultation to colleagues, identifying gaps in service and recommending solutions, participating in meetings, planning and evaluation initiatives, committees, events and activities, orienting new staff, determining staff schedules;
WHAT YOU BRING:
- Familiarity with harm reduction, the logic model and psychosocial rehabilitation principles as acquired through a relevant degree/diploma in human services with experience in providing personal support.
- Knowledge of personal care, medications and healthy habits/hygiene with the physical ability to cook, clean and provide other assistance to vulnerable and socially disadvantaged adults with special needs.
- A general understanding is also required of the therapeutic relationship with an ability to interact with clients on issues and priorities.
- Experience in working as part of a team of professionals.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required to work in a team environment and to engage the clients in some highly personal areas, such as developing healthy living skills, life skills and in maintaining interpersonal relationships.
- Crisis intervention and problem solving skills to intervene in conflict situations.
- Written skills sufficient to produce and maintain logs, files, records or statistical information.
- Good analytical, time management, and organisational skills to contribute to program planning and to co-ordinate and follow-up on issues or activities with clients
