The Residential Food and Nutrition Workers will support residents and their children through meal preparation, food and supplies coordination, cleaning and organizing the kitchen, pantry, and storage areas, and maintaining the safety of the shelter premises.

Hours of Work: 37.5 hrs. per week. Non rotational shifts from Mondays to Fridays: 12:00pm – 7:30pm.
Hourly Rate: $23.35

What to Expect in the RFNW Role

  • Prepare meals for residents and incorporate cultural food preferences and dietary restrictions into meal planning.
  • Coordinate with Food Path and Second Harvest, place orders and pick up from food banks.
  • Clean kitchen, pantry, and storage areas including appliances and shelves according to the Health and Safety Standards. 
  • Maintain, order, stock and inventory of all household supplies & equipment, prepare & place orders, and complete weekly grocery shopping in consultation with residents and staff.
  • Purchase and prepare snacks for children’s lunches and after school.
  • Maintain positive relationship with residents’ work with them around food and other nutritional or dietary needs.
  • Conduct weekly residents’ meetings.
  • Assist in orientation to shelter and preparing of the departure package items for residents.
  • Adhere to all Health and Safety Policies and Procedures as outlined by the organization to minimize risks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned for the effective operation of the agency including supports with intake and crisis lines.

About You:

  • Practices accountability with clients, coworkers, partners, and management.
  • Prioritize confidentiality and demonstrate empathy, self-awareness, values teamwork, and open communication.
  • Strong understanding of cultural and dietary needs meeting all nutritional clients’ needs.
  • Understanding and follow safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of food supplies, equipment, services, ordering, and inventory control.
  • Knowledge on food service preparation and temperature requirements.

Qualifications

  • University or college education in a related field, such as Culinary Arts or the equivalent in education/work experience and a minimum 2-years experience preparing and cooking in restaurants/institutional or similar setting, including cultural food preferences and dietary restrictions.
  • Experience working with clients in areas such as poverty, violence, and homelessness and understanding of the systemic barriers experienced by clients and their intersectionality of oppressions i.e., Social Housing Reform Act; Mental Health Act; Landlord Tenant Act; O.W. Act, ODSP Act, etc.     
  • Understanding of Gender Based Violence (GBV) and trauma as a complex social problem.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn the intersectionality of sexism, racism, classism, colonialism, homophobia, transphobia, islamophobia, antisemitism, sanism, etc. on clients’ and their children’s lived experiences of violence.     
  • Professional communication skills; dedicated to team building and strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Current First Aid and CPR level C training is considered an asset.
  • ASL is an asset. 
  • Must hold the Food Handling certificate.
  • Hold G license and reliable car.
