Part-Time Research Assistant

Position: Research Assistant

Location: Hybrid (virtual and in-person in Toronto)

Type: Part-Time (15 hrs/week)

Salary: $25-28/hour

Project:

Our 5-year project is a collaboration between Finding Our Power Together and the Centre for Grief
and Healing, titled Bridging the Gap: Indigenous Youth Leading the Path to Improved Mental Health Systems. This project focuses on strengthening the mental health system for Indigenous youth by conducting an Institutional Ethnography research study, engaging Indigenous youth and key informants, and building a culturally responsive model of mental health service provision. The project aims to create a more inclusive and effective mental health system that respects the unique needs and values of Indigenous youth, with a particular emphasis on reducing barriers, increasing accessibility, and promoting cultural humility.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the lead researcher, Project Manager and team to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment and in-depth reviews of existing mental health systems for Indigenous Youth.
  • Engage in various research methods, with a focus on conducting an Institutional Ethnography.
  • Assist in key informant interviews, participant recruitment, data collection, and analysis.
  • Conduct outreach efforts to secure research participants for the Institutional Ethnography.
  • Create an academic report summarizing IE findings, emphasizing Indigenous youth voices, needs, and priorities.
  • Support the development of long-term goals, outcomes framework, and activities to achieve meaningful results for improved access and support in mental health services.
  • Contribute to building an educational model for community organizations and professionals, aiming to reduce barriers and discrimination for Indigenous youth.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., research, social sciences, public health, psychology).
  • Experience in conducting comprehensive needs assessments and in-depth reviews of mental health systems.
  • Proficiency in qualitative research methods and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural competency and understanding of Indigenous issues.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Understanding of mental health and healthcare systems is an asset.
  • Previous experience in working with Indigenous communities or organizations is desirable.
