Summary

The Elementary Teachers of Toronto invites applications and nominations for its Organizer.

Description

The Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT) is the Toronto-local of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO). The local—the largest in Canada—acts as the representative body for approximately 10,000       elementary teachers (K-8) employed by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).

As a membership organization, ETT anticipates and responds to the needs of its diverse membership by:

  • Protecting and defending collective bargaining rights
  • Organizing and engaging members through political action
  • Providing support, professional development, and learning opportunities
  • Advocating on behalf of public education, our members, and the students in their care
  • Providing leadership in areas such as anti-poverty, anti-racism, non-violence, and equity

The mission of the Toronto Local is to be a unified, democratic organization of informed professionals which will anticipate and respond to the needs of its diverse membership, as well as advocate for children and public education.

It is within this context that ETT invites applications and nominations for its Organizer.

Reporting to the President, the Organizer will support the mobilization and engagement of ETT’s approximately 10,000 members, and play a key role in contract enforcement fights, campaigns, and the strengthening of the ETT Union. The Organizer will develop a strategic plan to organize and mobilize ETT’s members; create resources that educate members and activate them to become involved in their union; and design mobilization programs and training opportunities on high participation strategies that build member power. The Organizer will assist elected leaders in identifying and supporting grassroots member leaders, and prepare members to organize with their colleagues for strong worksites. The Organizer will plan specific campaigns and develop actions with the ETT membership to promote member rights and fight for a strong, socially just and equitable public education system. The Organizer will also build relationships and work with parents, community members and ally organizations on issues related to strengthening Toronto’s public education system and communities.

As the ideal candidate, you are a dynamic and results-driven individual with a passion for member rights, a strong, socially just and equitable public education system, and for turning ideas into action. You have proven history and demonstration of union activism and union/community/political organizing, coupled with practical knowledge of the operation of a public sector union. A demonstrated commitment to social justice and equity is required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required, as are technical skills, including proficiency in database and spreadsheet software, email, and social media/networking.

You bring grounded, hands-on knowledge and practice in organizing methods that foster solidarity and collective action among members and successfully bring together large and growing numbers of people. You are metrics-driven and understand the value of tracking and measuring member engagement. You have experience with campaign planning and development, coupled with the ability to lead campaigns/projects independently and in collaboration. You thrive in a busy, fast paced and rapidly changing environment and can prioritize tasks effectively and remain focused on ETT’s mission and strategic objectives.

This is a unionized position based in Toronto, and involves the need for flexible and often extended working hours.
