JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of People and Culture is responsible for the management of a comprehensive and innovative human resources program for the WISH Drop-In Centre Society. The incumbent works in collaboration with the senior leadership team members to deliver effective human resources services, including guiding and influencing a values-based culture, performance management, employee engagement, professional development programs, and equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.

Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, WISH is the largest sex worker support organization in Canada. For more than thirty-five years, WISH has offered a safe place of respite for women involved in streetbased sex work. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the strategic direction and operational oversight of core human resources functions. Aligned with WISH’s strategic priorities, the Director collaboratively sets and guides the direction, decisions, and policies for staff.
  • Ensures that the scope and focus of HR activities are aligned with WISH’s mission, values, and vision.
  • Oversees all aspects of employee engagement and development, and management. As our most senior people leader, this role focuses on the stewardship of the end-to-end talent strategy from recruitment to onboarding to offboarding.
  • Promote diversity in the workforce by removing unnecessary barriers to employment.
  • Leverage and analyze HR data to guide decision-making, priority setting and opportunity identification in staffing models and the way services are delivered.
  • Provides coaching, encouragement, and mentorship to new and emerging leaders in the organization on people management and leadership with a focus on recruitment and selection, performance management, organizational development & effectiveness, and leadership effectiveness.
  • Provides oversight and direction on all day-to-day human resources functions, including: People and culture best practice policies, systems, and processes; Innovative recruitment and retention strategies and programs; Creative compensation strategies and frameworks; Employee and leadership development programs; Performance management and reward and recognition programs; Employee relations; Equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives; Health & Wellness initiatives and best practices; Maintains compliance with all legal, regulatory and reporting matters.
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team and Board of Directors to build and articulate WISH’ strategic framework.
  • Facilitate organizational design, succession planning and people resource management strategies.
  • Participate in and monitor the Collective Bargaining process in partnership with CSSEA.
  • Provide leadership and direction on labour relations issues and grievances.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement contract interpretations, policies, procedures, and programs to create and improve labour relations practices.
  • Ensure labour relations processes are properly performed by interpreting the Collective Agreement and in accordance with the BC Employment Standards Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Participate in essential service planning; represent the organization, when needed, at union and labour relations matters.
  • Promote constructive union-employer relations through respectful communication and interest-based problem solving.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • 5 to 7 years recent related experience providing leadership and oversight to HR and administrative operations.
  • A bachelor's degree in a field such as Human Resources or Business Administration; CPHR designation preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Experience leading in a workplace environment with both unionized and excluded staff.
  • Experience developing and implementing staff development programs.
  • High level of proficiency in using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with an attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills with the ability to professionally connect with and influence a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to uphold the confidentiality and privacy of staff and the organization.
  • Ability to act with confidence and professionalism with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong personal effectiveness, integrity, credibility, discretion, humility, and accountability.
  • Personal and professional understanding of intersectionality, anti-racism, inclusion, equity, and power dynamics and how this plays out across teams.
  • Experience working and leading at non-profit entities is an asset

COMPENSATION & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Non-unionized, full-time permanent position.
  • Compensation starts at $89,000-$111,000/annual.
