Skills Ontario is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting careers in the skilled trades and technologies to Ontario youth through a variety of programs and competitions across the province.

We are adding a new member to the team, a Manager of Special Projects. Our employees enjoy a casual work environment, flexible schedules, and have a real opportunity to make a difference! The successful candidate will work remotely but must be available to attend meetings in Toronto up to 2-3 times per week at some times.

Manager of Special Projects (Contract Position)
(35 HOURS/WEEK)
Salary: $60,000-$78,000—depending on experience and expertise
Expected start date: February 5th, 2024 (or sooner) 

Under the guidance of the Director of Programs and Director of Stakeholder, the successful candidate will develop and deliver special conferences and events.  Two will be part of the Skills Ontario Competition, one for Guidance Educators and the other for aspiring student entrepreneurs. The project manager will be responsible for planning all logistics of the two conferences simultaneously.   There will also be other responsibilities including a new regional engagement initiative to connect employers and other potential partners with the skills promotion ecosystem.  Further, the Manager will work to develop new projects and opportunities with government and other funding sources.

Main Responsibilities

  • Planning all logistics of 2 key conferences as part of the Skills Ontario Competition
  • Working and establishing relationships with vendors and contracted services including but not limited to AV, Venue, Printing Services, Translator, among others.
  • Advertising event to School Board and other interested parties
  • Manage Registration using online platforms such as Eventbrite or JotForm
  • Ensure targets are met or exceeded.
  • Ensuring invoices are paid and sent in a timely manner.
  • Communicating with Senior Management during every step of the process to ensure conferences are on schedule.
  • Ensure projects stay on their set budget.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders
  • Completing, or overseeing the completion of, key reports
  • Develop and building relationships with government and other partners
  • Identifying new opportunities and securing new programs and projects

Requirements

  • Post-Secondary Education: in Event Management or job experience in planning events is required.
  • Knowledge of skilled trades and technology careers will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to manage a budget.
  • Ability to work with external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once.
  • Be highly organized and self-motivated.
  • 5+ years policy experience
  • Government relations experience
  • Excellent communications skills and experience in writing proposals    
  • Work in a hybrid environment with regular meetings in Toronto (at times 2-3 times per week).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of computers and of basic software, including Outlook and Microsoft Suite.
  • Social Media/ Marketing experience an asset, but not required (adobe, videos, photo shop, etc)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Provide a clean Criminal Record Check/ Vulnerable Screening Check
  • Must be willing to travel when required,
  • Be fluent in English, both oral and written. Fluency in French is an asset, but not required.

All other duties that may be assigned.
