Job Summary

GATC is seeking a full-time Communications and Campaign Manager to join its team in Ottawa to create communications strategies as well as relevant materials including print and graphic media, video and web communications, digital and social media, and provide media support for special events designed to drive the movement in fighting the consequences of tobacco use and other risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The Communications and Campaign Manager will report to the Executive Director and will work closely with the other team members.

Principal Responsibilities

Communications

  • Develop an annual communications plan that supports the GATC’s annual work plan
  • Manage GATC branding and liaise with external consultants and designers as required in the development of GATC resources and collateral
  • Oversee the -re design and maintenance of GATC’s website and ensure it is updated regularly
  • Manage the GATC’s social media strategy and channels
  • Draft occasional op-eds, create, design and populate GATC annual report and other promotional materials as required
  • Oversee quality of content and ensure accuracy and alignment with the GATC brand
  • Build and maintain partnerships with global media reporting on the FCTC and tobacco control
  • Create and manage communications for sessions of the FCTC Conference of the Parties, a meeting that usually happen every two years and where you will be required to:
    • develop and lead a proactive media campaign to support achievement of GATC policy goals
    • assemble and manage a team of 4 or 5 volunteers who put together a daily newsletter during the event
    • update GATC’s online channels continually
  • Monitor the media and online world for risks to GATC’s brand and reputation, including from the tobacco industry
  • Provide strategic advice to the policy team and support the development of effective communications products to support GATC advocacy campaigns (i.e. policy briefs, factsheets, videos, etc).
  • Provide ad hoc communications support to colleagues, board members and other partners

Campaigns

  • Successfully identify and devise communications campaign strategies needed to support GATC goals and implement those strategies through the designing, planning, testing and monitoring media campaigns (including World No Tobacco Day and other major events on the global public health calendar)
  • Design and deliver relevant campaign activities including events, public speaking engagements, and webinars
  • Execute campaigns inside budget constraints by planning, launching, scheduling and coordinating / training members
  • Oversee quality of content and ensure it is accurate, error free and in line with brand identity
  • Monitor and analyze campaigns through numerous channels and report on results at campaign’s end

Qualifications and skills

  • University Degree in international development, global health, communications, international relations, or public relations
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the communications field including the successful implementation of communications and advocacy campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement international communication strategies
  • Knowledge of communication procedures and principles as they relate to international non-profit organizations/NGOs, global public health, the UN system
  • Cross-cultural awareness, ideally developed through prior experience working with and developing communications plans for geographically and culturally diverse audiences
  • Experience organizing high-level, professional events
  • Political sensitivity, as this work requires collaborating with governments and members from across the globe
  • Strong time-management skills, ability to work independently and function well within a team, in fast-paced environments
  • Fluency in English is a prerequisite. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an important asset
  • Excellent writing, oral communications and editing skills
  • Proficiency with office software packages (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and design packages (Photoshop, Canva etc.)

Salary and Logistics:

  • Location: GATC staff work remotely, with Secretariat staff based in and around Ottawa, Canada. This position will be remote within Canada. (Please note that candidates must have prior authorization to work in Canada)
  • Duration: Full time (37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday)
  • Salary range: $65,000-$70,000 annually
  • Travel: This position will require some international travel
