Background

Ottawa Innercity Ministries (OIM) is an interdenominational, non-profit, Christian charitable organization committed to building partnerships, training and mobilizing volunteers to help those who are experiencing poverty and homelessness in downtown Ottawa. The goal of OIM is to meet the spiritual, emotional, social, vocational and physical needs of our street community, and to address the causes of poverty and homelessness with empathy and compassion in downtown Ottawa.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Managing Director, and as a member of a small team, the Communications Coordinator will have lead responsibility for engaging with key stakeholders and the media for the purpose of raising awareness and promoting support for OIM’s work.  This function will play a significant role in creating, maintaining and standardizing OIM publications, communications, social media and website. 

Duties

  • Builds awareness of OIM’s work by connecting and engaging with key stakeholders in person and electronically by developing relevant messaging, branding, and visual identities that convey OIM’s impact, value, and identity. 
  • As a team member, participates in the development and execution of OIM activities and events.  
  • Manages traditional and digital media relationships; increases social reach and improves search engine optimization; enhances online content; and provides high quality messaging; cultivates a strong digital presence by overseeing and directing social media accounts, website content, and coordinated email campaigns that engage and inspire our communities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop communication materials that accurately and consistently represent the organization's work and achievements; ensures that all materials for publication/presentation align with OIM’s values and maintain its reputation for integrity, transparency, and community.
  • Conducts regular monitoring and evaluation of communications products, stay up to date on communications best practices, and provide recommendations to improve performance metrics.
  • Maintains and cultivates contact databases of stakeholders including donors and media.
  • Other duties as required.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Diploma in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or equivalent.
  • 3 – 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience working/volunteering in the not-for-profit and/or charity sector are considered assets.
  • Strong presentation, multi-tasking and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong publishing/creative skills. 
  • Strong verbal communication skills are important, as in-person outreach to stakeholders and via telephone is required.
  • This position will entail the candidate working flexible hours.
  • Computer skills with experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet research.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • The Communications Coordinator will be a committed Christian, with values that will reflect the standards of the Word of God in theory and practice, according to the organization’s constitution and statement of faith.
