North York Women’s Shelter is looking for a dynamic Director, Development and Communications.
We are looking for a development and communications leader to join an incredible team dedicated to supporting the rights of women, trans and non-binary people and their children to build lives free of violence. This role requires an overall knowledge and expertise in creating, developing, and implementing the fundraising and communications plan to achieve the organization’s strategic goals and objectives.

About NYWS:
NYWS is a new kind of anti-violence centre pushing back against gender-based violence in Toronto. We are re-imagining support, services and advocacy for women, trans and non-binary people and their children experiencing violence. NYWS actively supports the rights of women, trans and non-binary people and their children to build lives free of violence by providing non-judgemental safe shelter, advocacy, and a range of programs and services including 24-hour crisis support.
Role Overview:
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director, Development and Communications is the primary fundraising and communications leader, leading both strategy and execution. The Director, Development and Communications is responsible for the growth and diversification of revenues through the development and implementation of grants, major gifts, planned giving, special events, and other fundraising programs as well as planning, design and implementation of communication/marketing plan.
Director, Development and Communications works closely with NYWS’ leadership team and supports employees and key volunteers in the identification, cultivation, solicitation of sponsors, and stewardship of major gift prospects and donors.
As an advocate for ending intimate partner (IPV) and gender-based violence (GBV), the Director, Development and Communications brings a strong intersectional feminist, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and trauma-informed lens. The Director, Development and Communications fosters effective partnerships and inspires employees to bring together people, ideas, systems, processes and technology to ensure the best possible outcomes for clients and their communities.

Salary Range:
$100,000 – $115,000

A typical day for the Director, Development and Communications includes the following tasks and responsibilities:
- Responsible for the planning, design and implementation of annual fundraising and communication/marketing strategy and operational plan to achieve the organization’s strategic goals and objectives.
- Build a community centered philanthropic spirit among staff, board members, donors, partners, and the community while building support for NYWS and adopting best practices for development.
- Participate in the development of NYWS’ financial plans and annual budget development.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with funders, donors, and community partners.
- Represent NYWS at events and make presentations to service clubs, corporations, foundations, faith, and donor groups in a manner that reflects NYWS’ values, is aligned with NYWS’ mission, vision and strategy and enhances NYWS’ public image.
- Develop and monitor internal fundraising policies and procedures to ensure alignment with leading practices.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements including CRA, Privacy legislation, Fundraising Code of Ethical Principles and Standards, and the Donors Bill of Rights.
- Provide regular reports to the Board, ED, management team and stakeholders on NYWS revenue performance and activity.
- Responsible for the development and growth of revenue streams reflective of grants, major gifts, planned giving, special events, and annual campaigns.
- Responsible for full-cycle funder/donor management to ensure timely completion of deliverables, development and adherence to financial budgets, and fulfillment of reporting requirements (quarterly/annual/ad-hoc).
- Lead community outreach and public relations efforts in conjunction with the management team as it relates to NYWS projects/events etc.
- Provide leadership and operations management for the Development and Communications portfolio, to ensure that services are high quality, reflective of NYWS’ values and aligned with the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
- Cultivate a healthy, engaging, and safe workplace that centers Community Centre Fundraising values.
- Foster a culture of teamwork and accountability, developing staff members to their highest potential.
We are looking for someone who has:
- A relevant undergraduate education in a professional discipline pertinent to the role function and/or an equivalent combination of education and relevant progressive experience.
- A minimum of 5 years experience as a fundraising professional with demonstrated performance in grant writing, major gifts, annual campaigns, planned giving and digital communications work.
- CFRE certification and membership in AFP are considered an asset.
- Commitment to an Anti-Racist, intersectional feminist, 2SLGBTQAI affirming workplace that attracts, retains, and motivates employees and volunteers.
- Ability to work with an intersectional feminist, anti-carceral, anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens from trauma informed practice framework.
- Outgoing with excellent networking skills and proven ability to motivate and support volunteers, stakeholders and connect well with donors.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, Bloomerang database management system.
- Experience with Adobe apps (Publisher, inDesign) and social media applications is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical and strategic planning skills.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate both written and orally with internal and external stakeholders.
- Sound judgment and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle matters of a confidential, political and/or sensitive nature with discretion and tact.
- Sound administrative and organizational skills and proven ability to multi-task to deadlines.
- Good financial management and business sustainability skills
- Strong work ethic with ability and skills to handle multiple priorities and projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines.
- Positive, enthusiastic, and committed team player.
- Good knowledge of volunteer recruitment and management an asset
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Checks (PVSC) with future checks.
